#HelpStopSHIW Social Media Content Contest for High School Students Grades 9-12

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

All you have to do is to submit your social media content related to intervening in a situation where you witness sexual harassment at work or at school by February 14th to langana@lao.on.ca.

The social media content can be on any platform you are familiar with and can be a post, slide show or short video (under 3 minutes). The posts will be judged based on their creativity, artistic/appearance and relevance to your age group of the message is being delivered.

The top three entries will receive prizes. Our first prize is a $200.00 gift card for Best Buy, our 2nd place prize is a pair of iPods. We are still in the process of seeking prizes and hope to have many more.

At the training we discussed The 5 Ds of intervening if you witness sexual harassment:

Direct: This is doing something at the time of the harassment to attempt to stop it such as calling out the harasser on their inappropriate behaviour either yourself or as a group;

Delayed: This is when someone intervenes after the fact either by asking the object of the harassment if he/she/they are doing okay, speaking with the harasser about their behaviour after the fact.

Delegate: This is when you get someone else, often a trusted adult, to intervene on your behalf. An example of this would be going to the manager to report the inappropriate behaviour and the impact on the object of the harassment.

Distract- create some type of distraction to allow the person being harassed to get away or to distract the person doing the harassment from the object of the harassment.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me by email at langana@lao.on.ca or by phone 613-264-7153 if you have any questions about the contest.
